Tape Symptoms

Media Decay

All digital storage media naturally decays over time, which will eventually cause data loss. Tape cartridges, however, outlive hard disk drives by decades. But excessive heat or moisture can exacerbate the decay.

Physical Damage

Tape can unspool, tear or flip through regular usage, and plastic components can become damaged in the event of a sudden shock. This becomes more likely the older the tape is.

Tape Drive Malfunctions

Many tape drives will have mechanisms to prevent the tape from sticking or jamming, but tapes may still malfunction. This can result in severe and immediate damage leading to data loss, which may be irretrievable.

Overwrites

Accidental overwriting is a common data loss issue for tapes. It can be caused by an incoherent backup strategy. Media degradation can also be caused by excessive rewrites, increasing the chance of corruption.

Data Corruption

Issues with a user’s chosen backup software can prevent files being written correctly, meaning data can’t be accessed. With newer tape drives, file corruption is very rare, but can still occur with older legacy formats.
