Samsung Unveils 870 EVO SSD

Samsung have unveiled their latest consumer solid-state drive (SSD), the Samsung 870 EVO, boasting significant improvements on its predecessor.

Launching with five storage capacities – 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB – the Samsung 870 EVO is a SATA SSD, and utilises Samsung’s triple-level-cell (TLC) technology. Targeted at casual laptop and desktop PC users, IT professionals and Network Attached Storage (NAS) users and marketed as an “all-round storage solution”, the 870 EVO boasts a 38% improvement over its predecessor series. The highest capacity drive, the 4TB model, is rated at 2400TBW, or terabytes written. This is an estimate of the amount of data that can be written to the SSD before the memory cells begin to wear out. It also comes with a five-year warranty.

The Samsung 870 EVO SSD is paired with the Samsung Magician software package. Magician enables users to undertake tasks such as updating the SSD’s firmware, view drive information such as volume used/free and temperature, and view drive details like the serial number, interface and firmware version. Users can also check their SSD’s performance, and can compare it with previous performance benchmarks to note any drops in performance. The Diagnostic Scan can perform a short or full scan, identify any errors, and correct them, depending on the severity.

Using Samsung’s latest controller, the 870 EVO SSD is able to reach read/write speeds of up to 560MB/s and 530MB/s, respectively. Compared with its predecessor, the Samsung 860 EVO, the 870 EVO is said to make everyday PC tasks such as starting up and web browsing noticeably quicker.

The Samsung 870 EVO SSD will be available to buy in a few weeks, with the prices to be confirmed.
