File recovery software...

When it comes to file recovery software there is no single answer. It really depends on what you are trying to recover and the operating system, together with the file format. Generally speaking, you will only be able to use software where there is logical damage to the data rather than mechanical or electronic damage to the hard drive. To determine which category you fall into depends of the symptoms. If there is no power getting to the drive, it is getting very hot, making unusual noises or is not recognised by the BIOS, it is likely to be the later and file recovery software is unlikely to help. Indeed it could make things a lot worse!

If the drive has been formatted, deleted or a drive letter has gone missing these are all indicative of a logical failure and software will often recover the data. Using file recovery software is generally very easy. However there are some golden rules that you must follow in all instances. Firstly never, ever install anything on the faulty hard drive or work with it in any way. Use another machine as the host for the file recovery software. Writing further data or even simply letting it run, could overwrite critical data. Your operating system is reading and writing data constantly, whether you are active on the computer or not! Take a ‘clone’ or ‘image’ beforehand and work on this to retain the integrity of the failed media. Most worthwhile data recovery programs allow you to ‘image’ the hard drive first. Once you have a ‘clone’, this is when you should start the scanning process. The second rule is to never write recovered data back to the faulty hard drive. Often when you check your recovered data, you may well find further errors at file level. If so you may wish to do a deeper scan and if the original data is overwritten, it will be rendered unrecoverable by further attempts.
