How to get data off an old hard drive

Ruth Evans,Data Recovery Technician says:

"Using the correct adapter is often all you need to access an old hard drive. Once it's connected, transferring your files is usually as simple as copying them to your new computer or an external drive."

Old hard drives can hold years of valuable files, from family photos and work documents to music, videos, and personal archives. Even if the original computer no longer works, there are several safe ways to recover your data.

1. Identify the Type of Hard Drive

Before connecting the drive, check what type it is:

  • SATA drives: Common in newer desktop and laptop computers.
  • IDE or PATA drives: Usually found in much older computers.
  • External USB drives: Often easier to connect directly to a modern computer.

2. Use the Right Adapter

The simplest method is to use a USB-to-SATA or USB-to-IDE adapter. These adapters let you connect the old hard drive to your computer through a USB port. Once connected, your computer may detect it like a normal external drive.

3. Copy Important Files First

If the drive appears, copy your most important files immediately. Start with:

  • Photos and videos
  • Work or school documents
  • Financial records
  • Email archives
  • Music or creative projects

4. What If the Drive Does Not Show Up?

If your computer does not recognise the drive, check Disk Management on Windows or Disk Utility on macOS. The drive may need a letter assigned, or it may have file system issues.

5. Be Careful With Damaged Drives

If the drive is clicking, grinding, overheating, or running very slowly, stop using it. These signs may point to physical damage. In this situation, professional data recovery is usually the safest option.

6. Back Up Your Recovered Files

After recovering your data, save it in at least two places, such as an external hard drive and cloud storage. This protects your files from future loss.

With the right adapter, careful handling, and a good backup plan, most old hard drives can still give you access to valuable files years after they were last used.
